New York LEGO Store grand openings

Post by vynsane » Mon May 17, 2010 4:11 pm

The new LEGO Store Calendar for June revealed the grand opening for the new NYC Rockefeller Center flagship store to be June 28-July 1:
Join in the LEGO Store’s Biggest Grand Opening ever, June 29 – July 1, in New York City!

A team of LEGO® Master Builders is coming to new flagship LEGO Store at Rockefeller Center, and building the biggest big apple in the Big Apple! During this exciting 3-day event, families and children of all ages are invited to help the LEGO team construct this giant, 15-foot apple, entirely out of LEGO bricks!

Plus, see amazing New York City-inspired LEGO models and get exclusive Grand Opening specials on limited-edition LEGO products, including the Brick Apple and LEGO New York t-shirts! For opening times, special offers and more information, please visit stores.LEGO.com.
I attended the grand opening of the Roosevelt Field, Garden City store and it was pretty fun - you can check out the pics I took in my Flickr set. The listing for the new store doesn't indicate anything about a free 'Grand Opening Exclusive Set', but it does mention specials on limited-edition products. Anybody going to attend this event?

Op... somehow I messed up the link to my flickr set and can't edit the initial post.

I'll check in at the store tomorrow, as I'll be in NYC, see how big it is and report back. Maybe I'll try to snap some pics.

Sweet, no prob. Should be quite the event if I can get there - turns out it's scheduled for Tuesday, June 29 - Thursday, July 1, which is odd... usually they're over a weekend starting on Friday. Though with the location and size of the venue, they're probably doing it during the week to control the volume of people.

HOLY CRAP it's going to be a big store - and they're in a prime location, too. They'll be diagonally across the ice skating rink from the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree - they are going to make so much money during the holiday season, it's not even going to be funny. I took a walk up there on my lunch break and got some pics.

They've updated the Events page for the NYC store with descriptions of the grand opening events and pics of the 15' apple model and the Grand Opening Store Exclusive set, which is also an apple, but looks a bit... off...

It does look a bit off. It's not round enough.

As long as it's not ridiculously marked-up due to being in NYC, I'll be happy. I can't wait to see the PaB wall.

They've got a pretty high sales tax, but LEGO doesn't mark up their own stock unlike Toys R Us. At least I've never noticed it if they do.

Their PaB wall is probably going to be the largest in the country :D

All bets are off in NYC - EVERYTHING's marked up, especially in the 'touristy' places, like Rockefeller Center or Times Square. They usually blame the high cost of rent, but the higher volume of sales should offset that, it's generally just greed. We'll see...

I've visited the Toys R Us in New York City a few times and I don't recall their LEGO being marked up at all actually. It was just the opposite, which surprised me. Most of the sets seemed a dollar or two under priced. Maybe the LEGO store will follow suit?

??? I'm surprised by your experience - maybe they were having a sale? They're at LEAST marked up to TRU standards, if not more so. I think I saw the Space Police 3 K-9 Bot impulse set for $7.50!

Wow that's a pretty enormous mark up. Maybe they were having a sale. I remember picking up two or three sets way cheaper than they were but I suppose my results are not typical.

You can check out my updated Flickr Set for more pics of the interior/exterior, including the huge PaB wall as well as the progress they've made on the 15' apple build.
