Investment Opportunities outside of Star Wars UCS

Post by Breeder » Fri Feb 26, 2016 11:46 am

I'm new to the forum but I've been an AFOL for around 3 years now. I've been investing in Star Wars UCS exclusively up until now. But I'm now looking outside the theme for investment opportunities.

I was wondering if any of the following would be good investments:

71006 The Simpsons House
71016 The Simpsons Kwik-E-Mart
76042 Super Heroes The SHIELD Helicarrier
10218 Creator Pet Shop

Really like both Simpsons sets but not sure about the investment potential. I heard that the Pet Shop is retiring soon but I think it already have been hoarded by investors.

Any other suggestions would be gratefully received!

Pet Shop is the most boring modular ever. Palace Cinema has more going for it, but the two Simpons buildinging are pretty epic.

I imagine the Helicarrier will be around for 5+ years like the Death Star.

I really like both The Simpsons sets but a lot of people commented that it doesn't have great investment potential. They are both top of my personal buy list but wasn't sure about buying extra sets as investments.

Anything else you think I should consider?

No one can guarantee the return value of a set years from now. The worst case is that you can still sell it at MSRP. If you do not satifsy with the reselling price, you could keep The Simpsons sets for yourself and make a MOC Simpsons village.

I really like the Simpson's house and K-wik Mart (I don't own them though... would love to have them). They look like a lot of fun. On the down side though not everyone is a fan of Simpson's LEGO. I'm very curious though about the demand for the Simpsons LEGO in the future. Its a very popular show and has been around for a VERY long time. The modular petshop on the other hand may appeal to buyers in the future because they start collected modular buildings.

I still see the Series 2 Simpsons CMF bags floating around in quite a few stores in my area... but I think that once they are gone people may suddenly want them. Funny how I want things after they've been retired

Someone else mentioned the Cinema modular set. I'm not sure but I think the Pet shop is the one that will be retired first of the two. Its high on my list must save up for before retirement. I really want to add it to my collection of modular buildings (It would only be my 3rd).

Conclusion... Wish I could have been more help ;-)

I hear some people saw that investing in Lego has had its day because all the news reports causing a lot of people drawn into it. I'm interested in investing to fund Lego as a hobby and I think there is still some potential but I think maybe you need to choose wisely.

What are your thoughts?

Good question. I don't have answers for that one either ;-) Sorry. I've wondered the same thing. If it has reached its high (had its day) then those that stockpile lots in the hopes for making a huge profit in the future may be somewhat disappointed BUT I do think that good choices in sets for investments will still sell well above retail... meaning they will still result in a profit. Basically the best advice is that buying below retail may be wise... although sets like Modulars are almost never discounted AND still I think they will sell well above retail after retirement. This could change though of course if LEGO were to begin re-issuing Modulars making it possible for new LEGO fans to buy once retired sets at retail prices. I have no idea if they would do this.... but its always possible and they did recently re-issue the Christmas set this year (was it the toy shop?) even though they did update it very slightly.

I only invest in the sense that I buy an extra or two that I think may be a good investment IF they interest me enough to be content with opening them up for myself if they don't make good investments. Like you I do it to support my hobby. I think the most that I've ever purchased for investment purposes (of the same set) is 4.

For example, if TLG releases another UCS Death star, it would impact to the after market value of the retired DS while many hoarders have couples of it (high supply). There are various factors to affect a set's value.

No investment does not come with risk. If risk is the biggest concern, it is better to treat Lego as a hobby "ONLY".

I thought The Simpsons sets would be a good investment as it seems unlikely that TLG would ever release new versions in the future. Will have to look for them on discount here in the UK.
