Have you tried washing them?

After searching the internet myself, I tried a splash of bleach in the a mix of dish soap and water. Let them soak for 4 or 5 minutes. Worked very well. No ill effects on any of the pieces that I noticed.

Maybe soak them in warm water w/ white vinegar?

Soaking in a solution with liquid dishwasher soap works pretty well. I usually let them soak for a day, and then rinse with clean water. Use a strainer so the small parts do not go down the drain. Water temperature should remain below 104F. Drying may take a couple of days, and some pieces need to be shaken to remove water held within.

I also separately hand wash any pieces with stickers on them, so that the stickers are not ruined. Usually a damp paper towel. This includes immediate drying of the stickered surface.

Some pieces will not release odors. These include tires, and softer pieces such as trees.

Thanks for the tips, I was a bit scared to use bleach or amonia.

I'd just avoid buying any LEGO parts/sets that don't come from a smoke free home.

Soup and water does the trick for me, no need for bleach or anything else.

But I think a beef broth would be a bit heavier and therefore more likely to absorb the smell :P

I was thinking if you soaked your Lego in soup, you'd definitely get the smoke smell out :P.
