Amazon damaged item

Post by Zeya » Wed Jun 29, 2011 4:24 pm

I placed an order with Amazon for 4 items, one of which was the Voodoo Jack Sparrow polybag. I chose super-saver shipping. One of the boxes that came had my little polybag underneath a larger item.

When I opened the polybag, the torso and legs were damaged - legs had a rubbed down corner and the torso had a stress fracture. Luckily the head and hair were undamaged.

So I emailed Amazon, and they got back to me right away saying they would ship out a replacement immediately, free of charge. I got it yesterday and it's undamaged and I'm happy.

However, I was waiting to get the thing, expecting to see some clarification on if they want me to ship back the damaged one. The only reason I think that is because of the wording of the email response I got, because it mentioned printing out a label to send the damaged item in. But it didn't say that returning the damaged one is mandatory or not doing it would incur some sort of wrath. Furthermore... this is a $4 item and would almost not be worth the shipping cost and trouble, or so I assume.

Anyone know if I should send the damaged one back, or just hang onto it? Anyone have this type of thing happen before?

Here's the email wording:
Hello,

I'm so sorry about the problem you had with your item. I've placed a new order for you at no charge. Here are the details:

Order Number: <SNIP>
Shipping Speed: One-Day Shipping
Estimated Delivery Date: June 28

To return the item, first click the following link to print your return mailing label:

http://www.amazon.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;<SNIP>

When you return the damaged item, follow the instructions listed on the mailing label page. If you don't have a printer or if you have any problems/need more information regarding returning the item, write back to us using the link given below to let us know your issue in returning the item or the extra charges you incurred to return the item, so that we can provide you appropriate solution:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/contact-u ... funds.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I'm sorry for the inconvenience, and I hope your new order works out. We hope to see you again soon.

Thank you for your recent inquiry. Did I solve your problem?

If yes, please click here:

You can keep it, unless you really want to send it back to them. Now you have two Jack Sparrow minifigures!

The same thing happened to me except with the desert attack battle pack. It seemed to big a hassle, and I didn't want to spend money on shipping to return it so I didn't do anything.

Actually, it's quite the opposite. You can print out a return label from their website for returns. Then just leave it for the mailman to pick up. I've done it before, no problems. Shipping is all paid for. They determine on their end whose fault it is, if it's a damaged item no charge, but if you return because you didn't want it, they would charge you back the necessary costs.

Thanks, I guess some things seem harder than they really are.

drtabo is correct. If you don't return the damage/defected item, they may place charges on your credit card. You can ship it back in the box that had the replacement.

Yes, the wording 'When you return the damaged item' would indicate that they expect you to return it. Just because they didn't use stronger wording doesn't mean they don't care if you return it or not.

I've never received nor returned a damaged item, but I did order three Space Police "Smash n' Grab" sets when they were 50% off around Christmas last year, and received one correct set and two DUPLO sets that somehow had the "Smash n' Grab" inventory sticker applied to the back. I submitted a 'wrong item' form, which is basically the same exact procedure as a 'damaged item' form. They sent me the correct items (which I received THE NEXT DAY!) and boxed up the incorrect items in the box I received the new items in, printed out the label, left it on the front porch and that was that. Easy Peasey, really.

FINE. I'll return it... *kicks pebble* I don't want to get charged an additional $4 for some broken Lego.

By the way it says I have to drop it off at a "UPS location". This really does seem borderline silly for a $4 item. Oh well.

Thanks for your help everyone.

That seems odd... I would email them back and verify this, UPS should pick it up from your location.

Does the return info have a signature required for you shipping it back?

If no, I think you can drop it off with USPS and they will hand it over to UPS. I know the reverse is true for some orders I place with B&N and Amazon.

If the item is within USPS 'normal shipping' dimensions, and does not require signature confirmation for delivery, I will get it in my mail box rather than have a box at my door or the UPS "Sorry we missed you, we'll try again tomorrow" sticker on my door.
I have mixed feelings about new releases: I can't wait to see and get the new sets... but I can't figure out where I'm gonna put them or store them.

Maybe if you send it back, it will end up on Amazon Warehouse Deals. I'd like to see that one: "Condition - Used (kinda crushed)"

If anyone cares... I did in fact return the damaged item. I got an email a week or two later letting me know they got the damaged item. End of story.
