Lego set - better to sell apart or put together?

Post by earl9371 » Tue Aug 30, 2011 6:21 pm

I'm getting ready to list on eBay a pretty large and popular Lego model that I've pieced out with new parts from a variety of sources. I'll actually have two of them, as I want to build one first to make sure I have everything.

My question is for what would be the best way to list this piece on eBay - as a finished piece, or as pieces to be put together to make this particular model? I'll have photos of the finished piece that I can show either way in the auction (with the proper description of the lot). Whenever I've bought out of the box Lego like this I've always taken it completely apart and rebuilt it myself because that's what I enjoy, but I know not everyone's wired that way.

So what should fetch the better price - together or apart? I appreciate your insights!

I think the standard is to have it as individual bricks to be built and not as a shipped, complete model...plus this may save some shipping charges if its a dimensionally large item (if you can get it in a flat rate box, that is)

I've seen others list it as shipped as a complete model but would take it apart if the buyer prefers. That way you would get bidders from both sides.

Built models seem to always fall apart (at least partially) during shipping. Hopefully the buyer understands this.
It's good to prove that the set can be completely built so finished pictures are always welcome.

(I bought a custom built Ewok Village from Australia and it was completely destroyed. There were no instructions so I had to guess everything since the pictures were low quality. The build quality was incredibly poor and it's fragile just as it stands there. I'll probably never buy a custom model again unless it comes with build instructions.)
