[US] TRU minifig pricing

Post by brixter » Sat Sep 17, 2011 8:15 pm

Hello,

I'm trying to get a sense of TRU's pricing on series 5 minifigs. In New York City, the price is a staggering $3.99 per minifig. Online, they are priced at $3.49 which is also above MSRP (although series 3 is at $2.99), but I can only order three at a time. Are there any TRU stores where the price is $3.49 (or even $2.99) or do I need to accept the painful TRU tax?

I had lucked out and visited a new TRU on opening day where they had S5 prices at 2.99. They rang up at 3.49, but they said they would honor the 2.99 price.

Is there any reason you're holding to TRU so close, versus other options?

I want to take advantage of the B2G1. The Lego store closest to me (Rockefeller Center) also has prices at $3.49 and they rarely have a decent discount. I got very lucky once and found series 4 minifigs for $1.50 each at Target, but there are not too many Target stores that are close. Borders is no longer an option.

With the sale, $3.49 is an OK starting price - after the discount, they come out to $2.33 each. $3.99 is ridiculous, but $2.99 is awesome. Congrats on the honorable TRU employee.

Brixter: Get used to it. That is the NYC TRU tax. YMMV but so far I have seen that the Queens stores are the worse. To avoid that, you may have better luck by going to the lego store and purchase them at msrp.

I am used to it (doesn't mean I like it). I'm trying to see how far the TRU umbrella of ridiculous mark-up extends. Are they $3.49 by you or $3.99? Is this true for all really big cities? Sometimes in NJ, they don't do the crazy NYC mark-up, so I'll make the journey across the Hudson. Without having a car, I have to be selective on these Lego quests.

I guess this is where living nowhere helps. Our TRU sells the minifigs for $2.99 and there is no limit.

and be credited with LEGO VIP points for those dollars you spend  , which is better than TRU points system since I get half or quarter point value when I get "sale" items.

Tru sold s3 and s4 in my area for $2.99. Right after s5 came out I bought a box at $2.99 each. Now they are marked $3.49. Tru figured out how popular they are and decided to add some tru tax to almost everyone it seems.
I have mixed feelings about new releases: I can't wait to see and get the new sets... but I can't figure out where I'm gonna put them or store them.

Same here. They were at 2.99 for a week or two tops and now are 3.49

NYC has it's own mark up on top of TRU tax. I saw that when POTC QAR ship was $153 at TRU in Queens. There is no Guarantee that you won't get the TRU tax when going to NJ. I've seen it there too, so you have to make it worth it when you cross the border now with tolls up to $12. If you want to go after the TRU sales, best bet is to do it online. Right now the Minifigs are $3.49 by me. I'm just outside of NYC. I believe LI is also $3.49.

Crazily enough, the Times Square TRU has the S% minifigs at $3.49, while Queens and the Bronx are at $3.99. Picked up my first 24 of the series - felt good to get back into bag molestation mode (not really).

Video game boxes? Do you mean the large display cases with sliding glass doors with a lock on it?
