General LEGO city or platform layout (PICS) suggestions

Hi all,

I have been working on a layout for my sets to accomodate both my desires to build a city as well as my Son's love of Medieval themes (Kingdoms, Castles, POTC, HP) and so far it's been a challenge :)

On the city side today i just started trying to add tracks to the existing scheme. My first comment/questions is: Are there corner track pieces available that matches the angle on road plates? I was hoping to run track alongside a road, however the angles to not match up

My overall attempt was to have both sides completely separate however attached via a "Floating" bridge. It works however it does get detached from time to time when my son starts playing heavily and bangs into the sides of the tables. It's very addictive and i just can't keep up. I have a 3story modular going up, trying to apply tracks, still working on the police compound, designing a parc area and my next steps are to try and make a waterway area under the bridge so that i have a place to put the boats....

Would love to see what others have done to incorporate, standard city sets, modulars, tracks, etc....

Wow, you city is turning out great! Combining medieval themes along with a city just don't go together very well, but I think you did a great job. As for the train tracks, you could use the flexible track you can bend it any way you like and it can do tight corners as well.

Very nice work in progress with mix city scape from modern to medieval.
I like the "Floating" bridge you have between the two.
I would think you would keep the modern city scape with all the modern sets and trains and city stuff and than make the medieval scape more rugged and maybe mountainous to have dirt paths for horse wagons instead of tracks or paved streets and make the transition of the "Floating" bridge city part modern to a more medieval rustic wooden bridge with some brown bricks and stuff basically splitting the "Floating" bridge in half.
Sorry my imagination just running wild.
As for the tracks I haven't seen any tracks like that that would match the street bends but as mentioned flexible tracks might be the way to go. Also, the tracks you have now look larger so it would depend on the train set you would use as well.

Question, what building do you have on the side of the Fire Brigade 10197 - is it a MOC or another modular set?
You have the Grand Emporium, Fire Brigade and ?

Thanks for the commentary... I really like the split Bridge idea!!! I am going to have to look at that. My intent was to make dirt roads however my son really likes the roads.... Not sure if i am going to win that one :)

As for the 3rd modular, it's a variant on a plan i purchased online some time ago (http://www.ebay.ca/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll ... OC:CA:1123" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;)

Little in the color scheme is the same and i had to change bunch of other things up due to my limited parts inventory :) I am still missing the top level and roof... And yeah, i have the Grand Emporium and Fire Brigade setup. I want to grow the log cabin as i have bought over the holidays a bunch of spare sets however i have yet to find any examples of other who have done this.....

Thanks for sharling the pictures! I hope to setup a similar project myself someday, but my space is very limited right now. Oh, and I'll need to think up a way to include my son's Star Wars sets.

The only thing I can think of is maybe track down some older road baseplates for the "Harry Potter" side of town. They'll match the two moon baseplates you already have and will help make that side of town look a little different.

I think with a Hogwarts express you could really bring a sweet train element to combine medieval and city themes. Looks pretty sweet!

I second that thought. I kept thinking you needed more train in your city (and one of those sweet floating bridges to get it across the tables). My first thought was one of the high-speed trains like 7938, but a steam-style train like Hogwart's Express 4841 would really help tie the themes together.

4841 has been discontinued I believe, but is still available for a reasonable price. It wasn't designed to be motorized but I've done it with good results.

Well, i thought i'd post an update on this...

Our collection keeps growing and as such, we've decided to slice off the Castle themed area to a board of it's own and spread the cityscape over the existing two boards currently shown.

Each board is 4' X 8' in size (I only wish the 32X32 or 48X48 plates fit this size ). I intend to leave the bridge in place and have one section represent the city and the other represent the countryscape. On this note, i am looking for suggestions on how to layout the roadways in the most effective manner possible. My intent for the city side is to add some more modulars, a park, possibly a train station and leave the police station in place.

On the country side, i intent to place the creator homes, a construction pit, a farm, a train stop and more. I'd also like to try and develop a dropped area (Using BURPS for the vertical to denote a water area) to possibly include a marina.

I am not happy with the way the roads are currently laid out around the modulars and want to change it up a bit.

As you can see, not allot has changed :)
