Advice on two sets to purchase

Post by mgs » Mon Nov 26, 2012 3:17 am

I'm just wondering (not sure if I'm posting in the right forum), are Diagon Alley (Harry Potter set) and LOTR Orc Forge both worth buying at MSRP right now? Has either ever been on sale? I was thinking of ordering the two on Lego Shop and getting in on the 10% deal, but having a hard time deciding to purchase now or wait for a better deal. Thanks!

probably wont find aby better deals on diagon since it should be near the end if its line soon. it has been available for a while now and becoming harder to find.

lotr willbe around for a while longer since it has only recently been released. postpone on that. might be able to snag one at a barnes and noble with a 30% off coup.

agree on the DA. Its soon to be only available on the after-market (with higher prices).

Orc Forge is a Target exclusive, so you wont find that at bn.com. Target regularly runs sales, and you'll likely be able to pick it up between now and January at a decent discount (20% off or so).

So, how about Diagon Alley and Maersk train? Both were released on 2011, and they may be discontinued at anytime. Which one is more sought after? I can't decide which one to get, and I could get one only.

I think the answer to this depends on what kind of building you enjoy, and/or your hope or expectations for the future. For a pure investment, I tend towards items that adult buyers will go for: sculptures, architecture, and city/castle themes. Both the DA and MT will likely appreciate. I see demand for the DA being driven more by architecture builders seeking the unique pieces more than for the Harry Potter minifigs. One the other hand, the MT is a clear train play, which I always see demand for. The flip side of the coin is: if you decide later on to open the box, which one would you rather have on hand... if you are on the fence, that's the one I would go for.

Thanks SpaceViking for the input. It was true that the minifigs from DA did not impress me, and I was disappointed with the "no print" on goblin.

After seriously studying the reviews of both sets last night, I found that DA had more unique elements than MT. The major issue with MT was that it came with 2 identical trailers and 3 identical containers, which showed repetition to me. Thus DA won the race, and I would prefer to open DA.
