Someone wrote in the comments for the Modular Western Town that it uses "some illegal techniques". What does that mean? :/

Don't think any of them will get approved. The modular Western town had a chance but now it will conflict with the Lone Ranger. Nintendo have a contract with Knex and other toy companies, and Zelda is too close to LOTR.

A quarterly review from June that's only know being brought up? What about the summer and fall "quarterly" reviews?

It is with great pleasure we reveal that the next LEGO CUUSOO set will be the Back to the Future Time Machine, based upon the LEGO CUUSOO project by m.togami and Sakuretsu. As one of the earliest projects on the site’s global open beta, headlines of a potential Back to the Future LEGO set was seen on popular sites including Gizmodo and Brothers Brick, helping LEGO CUUSOO gain massive appeal.

The final product is still in development in coordination with our license partner, Universal Partnerships & Licensing. We'll show the final model and you’ll be able to order your own copy when it becomes available in mid-2013 (exact dates and pricing to be determined).

What does the review process look like?
The review process goes through four distinct stages; Brand Fit Analysis, Business Case Development (including License Agreements if applicable), Model Design, and then a Final Review, where the findings of all prior stages are reviewed together. How did we arrive at our decisions?
We know you are interested in more information about the decision process, and what has happened with each project. Though we cannot share all details of our business decisions, here is what we have decided to share about each project:

Back to the Future DeLorean Time Machine

After analyzing the supporters of the Back to the Future project, we learned that this product has a broad, worldwide appeal. The model presented in this project is built very closely to the LEGO Group’s design standards and has therefore provided a strong base to design the final product. It has a high play value and it fits well with supporters’ price expectations.

For these reasons, the Back to the Future project has passed the LEGO Review, and has been selected for production as the next LEGO CUUSOO set. The final product, pricing, and release dates are still being determined.

EVE Online Ships – Rifter

The supporters we received for the EVE Online Ships – Rifter project allowed us to examine the feasibility of another gaming-related product. However the Rifter presented a more challenging business case when considered alongside other potential products in this Review period. Therefore, the LEGO Review Board has decided that this project does not meet the requirements for the business case.

Modular Western Town

The Modular Western Town project conflicts with an ongoing project at the LEGO Group. As a result, the project does not meet the business case requirements and has not passed the LEGO Review.

The Legend of Zelda

The Legend of Zelda project shows broad support among gaming enthusiasts . This project has provided great inspiration and concept work for what could be a very nice product.

However, multiple new element moulds would be required to create the minifigures for such a product, and the expense of these moulds means that the Legend of Zelda project does not pass the LEGO Review on the basis of the business case.

The western "conflicts with an ongoing project" bit - Is that just Lone Ranger or are there any whispers of another western theme set?

For me, I'll wait and see what the final BttF looks like, but glad for all you folks that were hoping for it :)

First of all let me say that the Back to the Future idea seemed the most likely to win. As someone else pointed out the modular western town conflicts with the Lone Ranger sets that are due out soon. Although the Zelda idea is cool, building sets based on video game themes like Halo, Mario, and World of Warcraft are done by other companies and as such seemed less likely to be supported (Yes there are Lego video games but those are based off of the legos and action movies, not the other way around). I didn't even recognize the EVE online ship as I had never had played the game and dismissed it due to lack of visual appeal and also because of the video game argument listed above.

Since I had only started getting into Legos again here recently, I had never heard of Cuusoo until last week although I had seen the Hayabusa and Minecraft models on Lego's main site. Honestly I don't like the Shinkai and Hayabusa models and I don't understand how they got chosen with all the other great ideas for Lego sets that are out there. The Minecraft idea was cool, but it was so popular that it became a victim of its own success by being scalped for multiple times its retail price on Amazon and Ebay despite the Hayabusa model still being available for purchase on Lego's website.

Even though the Back to the Future set seemed the most likely choice, the Delorean time machine models (without figures) are already sold as kits on Amazon by Ichiban toys and a smaller set by Custom Bricks.

Except for the lack of figures and a potential hoverboard accessory, these sets are already available (albeit not directly from Lego). Why was this project even considered with the availability of the sets listed above?

With all that being said, I'm underwhelmed and confused by a lot of the ideas that are put into actual production or being considered by Cuusoo compared to some of the awesome mocs that I've seen in the past done by others.

Huh! I thought the Back to the Future one had no chance and that the western town would be a shoo-in. Lego always surprises me.

I guess we're starting to see a precedent here that Lego is willing to do one-off contracts for Cuusoo items, as evidenced by Minecraft and now Back to the Future. I personally would like to see more non-licensed content; the western town was one of the best I've seen so far.

I don't understand the comments here disliking Cuusoo. They're putting out sets from it at a reasonable clip. Perhaps it's just ignorance as to what it takes to produce and market a product. It's quite an ordeal. I don't know of anything else out there like Cuusoo from a large, established company. There are things like Kickstarter, but those are typically mom-and-pop and startup companies.

I have a question. Does Lego only choose one of the items per quarter, or might they choose two or more in the future? I also assume it's their discretion to choose none at all or change the rules as they see fit, but have they stated they'll only be picking one?

We will get plenty of Western stuff with the upcoming Lone Ranger theme. It's a pretty clear conflict with that license. Also, the scale of those buildings would have made it almost impossible to create a product at a realistic price point. Each of those buildings is the size of a modular or close to it, and there are multiples on the street. That's not counting the bricks used to build the environment. Doing anything close to that in a retail release that average fans can afford would have been extremely difficult.

As for BTTF...since CUUSOO sets rarely show up on store shelves, I don't think the appeal to children matters at all. They are going to be aiming this more at adult fans and a pretty strong cult following for the license. Seriously, these movies still have a ton of fans out there who will actively seek out this set. BTTF is one of the more iconic movies of the 80s and the time machine as a cemented place in pop culture to this day.

As for the future of CUUSOO, I do agree that it is slowly becoming a one-of license shop. That's going to happen though when you have to solicit support from a broad community to make these projects hit 10k votes. I have voted for many great and well designed projects on there that I'm sure will never be made. As long as licensed IPs are allowed to be posted as projects, those are always going to be the top vote earners.

I understand it will not be the same thing, but it will be the first western theme in quite a few years and the initial images of the sets all look really good so far. There's nothing stopping you from creating your own buildings similar to the CUUSOO project if you want to.

It's also possible the designer could release instructions similar to what the person who designed the Winchester project eventually did. It's not the same as buying a kit, I realize, but there are other options you can go with.

I think just about everyone can predict the outcome for the UCS Sandcrawler already. That design is pretty much impossible for LEGO to put out on its own, given the size and part count.

Cuusoo was first made available in japan where only 1000 votes were needed to get the models made. first was shinkai. Shinkai is highly sought after now or at least when I looked on ebay back in the fall. Fortunately I had my brother who was living/working in japan buy mine years ago for a decent price.
