I have a fair amount of disposable cash and while much of it does go to Lego, I still have to pick and choose what I buy. I have always loved Space and Castle themes and somewhat interested in Star Wars and a few other themes. Some stuff like LotR/Ninjago can sort of mix with Castle and Star Wars with the Space theme. When it comes to new stuff I try not to buy more than 2 themes. I tend to Bricklink or PaB for parts and minifigures and only buy the really bigger, nicer sets. Even the Helms deep castle felt kinda 'meh' after I had put it together. The Galaxy squad sets are awesome. Anyway, if you are going to go crazy, stay with only 1 or 2 themes. Otherwise you will get overwhelmed by all the choices

I have really enjoyed reading this post and the rules that many of you have established.

For me it was really what someone else said about not buying the complete theme or line...

I love LOTR and The Hobbit books but I refuse to buy all of the sets. I have decided which figures are the most important (my favorites and/or key characters) and I will buy those on secondary markets. I most certainly will NOT buy all of the dwarves from the Hobbit.

For me its about buying the figures that I MUST have and the pieces that I MUST have for future MOCs. Pieces or figures that may not be available in the future.

For instance with Batman.. I will not buy each Batman variant and every villain (although I really want to) but I have chosen favorites. I won't buy each set either for the sets. I will decide which is the best or most iconic. At the moment I'm waiting. I haven't bought any LEGO batman sets for the vehicles. Every DC set bought I have sold the figures that I don't need and even the Batboat. I sold two Batboat sets (Aquaman and Mr Freeze). The first set I sold everything and everyone except for Mr. Freeze. The 2nd set I sold everything and everyone except for Aquaman. I think after doing that I actually spent about 3 dollars for both Aquaman and Mr. Freeze. This does take a great deal of time on my part though (taking pics.. posting online offers... and then packaging and shipping items) but it definitely helps me to support my LEGO hobby. I am not always as fortunate either. When I bought LEGO 76005 Spiderman Daily Bugle and sold all figures except for Dr. Doom I did not do well at all. The profit from the other figures weren't nearly enough to cover the cost of the set ... but for about $15 I had all of the building and Dr. Doom. I recently decided that I didn't need Dr. Doom (I realllly wanted him) but I can sell him for a fair amount of money and buy things that I really want

I'm waiting for a Batmobile or vehicle that is the best (my opinion) and that one I will buy. So I will probably have a DC collection of about 10-15 figures and 1-2 vehicles (depending upon how long the line runs). Its been hard resisting the urge to buy Arkham Asylum breakout 10937 but I've decided I will not buy it unless I find it on clearance or an incredible deal. I snagged Poison Ivy for $7 on ebay over the weekend (lucky lucky me). She was a figure that I would not buy unless I could find her for under $10. I bought bane from the same seller at a great price. I will resale Bane to cover the cost of Poison Ivy. Although I like Bane... I decided that he is a character that I do not have to have.

Thanks for the great posts and ideas that everyone has posted. Its been a fun read.
