Have you rented Lego on Pley.com?

Post by LegoIt » Wed Jun 18, 2014 8:18 am

So this new concept of renting Lego like you would rent dvd's though netflix really intrigues me. The Pley system has 3 levels based on the size sets you want to build - small, medium and large for $15, $25 and $39 a month (USD).

I understand the large sets include the Death Star and the Super Star Destroyer - two sets definitely outside of my budget to purchase. However, their shipping is supposed to be really fast (they pay return ship too) so if we had the time I figure we could build both sets in 1 month for the $39.

Has anyone tried this? Looks like a great deal but wanted some feedback.

Never tried this but I like to keep my LEGO. When I have to ship the LEGO back, I will be on my knees and crying. The price for a small set is ridiculous as is the medium. You should just buy the sets. However the large sets are a different story. But for $40, you could just save that and buy the set you want later. Just think about how you'd feel sending that beautiful LEGO set back. If you don't mind not keeping it, then this website is great. If you're like me, you wouldn't bother with pley.com. Hope this helps.

I honestly don't really get this service. Part of the fun of LEGO for a lot of people is building the set, displaying it, playing with it, taking it apart and building something else with it... rinse and repeat. Renting LEGO to build the set and then sending it back is just taking half of the fun out of it. I guess if all people want to do is build the official set according to the instructions and then taking it apart never to build it again, this service works for them.

What a disappointment this service has turned out to be.

I signed up on July 1st, didnt receive an email from them for over a week. Once I sent a letter cancelling they sent me a set (not one from my queue). So I called and complained.

The operator was very helpful and explained there was a technical glitch not an inventory issue. He gave me a months credit as well as an additional set. And we were off. We had two sets to build did those and returned them. The next set I received was not a preferred set in my queue. But fine it was a set. We built that and sent it back. Then today I get another email, nothing in my queue is available.

So I need to pick yet another set. It's a great concept but they do not have their legs yet. Renters beware.

I have now received 7 sets from pley. Not one has been on my preferred list. During a recent call they said that is in fact an inventory issue. Not a technical glitch.

I'm really surprised a service like this even exists. I feel like JustBrickin and I can't quite see myself sending the sets back without feeling terrible. Plus, isn't it kind of a waste of money? I'd much rather just save and get the sets. (Or at least try to save enough given that the price inflation makes it nearly impossible).
