BEWARE: Sears Canada EPIC fail on lego shipping

Post by gylman » Fri Nov 18, 2011 2:51 pm

Sears Canada recently had a decent sale on LEGO.
I picked up the Queene Anne's Revenge for a reasonable (for Canada) 125$.

It arrives at my house with the actual set box as the shipping container, a couple of Canada Post stickers slapped on the front of the box, dented and partially opened of course.

Unbelieveable. In 10 years of buying LEGO, I've never had a LEGO set come this way from retailer. It was my first and last time dealing with Sears Canada.

So sorry to hear that. Thats even worst than the order I've had a few years ago. Mine's was at least wrapped in a shopping bag (teared when it arrived).

Still bad service as I had to pay for shipping fee AND their handling fee. You would expect more when you pay for shipping, but no, its the other way around. After that, I learned my lesson.

When I ordered from Sears (can't remember if it was once or twice), both times I got them to ship to a local store. Both times I saw that there was no packaging with the Lego set, it was just the Lego set itself with shipping labels all throughout it.

Demand a refund or make them give you an extra discount (10-20%).

Sears never offers any extra discounts. I mean, they're not even willing to refund my shipping fee back even though its their fault.

Talked to them for half an hour and still no luck. I believe their call center is based in India or something as they seem to have trouble understanding English.

Shipping to a store is better than shipping to your home. First, its cheaper because you only need to pay handling fee (no shipping fee). Second, you can inspect the item on the spot. If its not good, you can demand a refund right away. Regardless, I still think Sears needs to improve their shipping standards. Its even worse than Toys R Us.

India? Wow, why would they have a call centre on another continent? Cheaper wages?

Yes, all their call centres are in India. Demand to speak to a supervisor and you will be transferred to Belleville, Ontario. They are better to deal with there. However, you need to run through the hoops. They will not offer you a discount at all.

What they can probably offer is to ship replacements to a local Sears store. Then they will exchange them for you there. However, last time I did that (I had exactly the same problem as you - they slapped the UPS labels on the LEGO box and there were even bags missing) they were not easy to deal with either.

Otherwise they can send UPS to pick the boxes back up and then give you the refund. If they ship out new boxes it will be exactly the same problem as before.

Even if you ask them to wrap items or put them in a box it will NOT work (went through that a couple of times). Boxes will still be destroyed... they are awful!

My advice would be to never get LEGO shipped to your house from Sears. If it's an amazing deal (such as Outlet -40% off already -30% to -40% LEGO) then get it delivered to a major Sears retail store. Never to the local Mom and Pop sears retail 'store' (or it will be damaged as well).

Ugh, I hate it when stores do this. I had this problem when I ordered the Green Grocer from Toysrus and the tower bridge set I ordered from Argos in the UK. With TRU I got a new set, that survived the trip but with all the ugly stickers on it. With argos I had to live with spending full price on an open, beat up box with labels all over it.

Since then I try and limit my lego purchases, to S@H, amazon and chapters.

Squished during transit (picked it up like that from the Post Office) - the result of inappropriate packaging on behalf of chapters! They do that sometimes when they want to save on packaging for really small sets... still it's disappointing!
