School me on the LEGO VIP program

Post by Brownstone » Mon Jan 23, 2012 1:04 pm

Can you all bring me up to speed on the LEGO VIP program? It looks like it is basically a 5% discount (spend $100 get a $5 credit) but maybe there is something more than that I am missing?

Every so often they go crazy and double the rewards/future credit you can earn.

Ooooh! Aaaaah!

More recently, they released a supposedly VIP-exclusive set (10230 Mini Modulars), and a few of the top tier VIP buyers got invited to a special Black Friday preview, but, really, the 5% back every $100 is it.

It's a really, really poor rewards program as they go, and -- as you can see from this site -- you can often find a much better deal shopping elsewhere, but if/when you have to shop LEGO direct, it's better than nothing.

What's to loose the VIP membership is free  and for $100.00 bucks which is calculated by the cost of Lego sets bought at a TLG B/M store or TLG online shop you get $5.00 bucks and with a every now and then offer of double points or some kind of VIP point promotions it can add up. Even if you don't buy often but once and while it still doesn't hurt to have it since it is being offered for free. There have been some exclusive offers for VIP members only as well.

The black Friday invite was not necessarily for VIP top tier buyers either this was just luck of the invite for some VIP members who had a TLG B/M store in their location. As I heard from others who maybe joined a month earlier got invites while others who have been member longer and spent more got no invite to their TLG B/M store so IMO it was just luck. But there were still other good deals for black Friday but not great.

The Lego VIP is fine, nothing hidden and no gotchas in it but if you tend to buy all your Lego's from other retailers and nothing from TLG then it's probably not worth it but if you have or plan to buy from TLG then get it - it's free...

Here are the pluses that I like:
  • the rewards don't expire
  • they are prorated across the purchase, should you decide to return something later or part of an order gets cancelled. (i.e. if you use $10 in rewards on a $20 purchase, it gets counted as 50% off each item)
  • IIRC, if an order is cancelled, the vip rewards used are returned (
Compared to TRU's awful rewards, the LEGO VIP program is golden.
