Worth investing in Hoth Echo Base - Limited Ed. ?

Post by Valancey » Sun Jul 22, 2012 11:37 pm

Good day everyone,

Quick question for you more seasoned investors:

- A local store (in Europe) is selling his remaining Star Wars LEGO Set 7879 Hoth Echo Base off.
Would you consider investing in this set? I am undecided yet.

Kind Regards,
Valancey

I personally like it and think it will do well. I picked up a couple a few weeks back when it was 30% off at TRU. It's hard to find good deals on TRU exclusives and I wish I would have bought more. If it's on sale over there, it might be a good opportunity.

There are some who do not think it will do so well and think it will be another "Home One" set. So I may very well be in the minority. Like any other set, you will ultimately have to decide. Maybe some others will chime in here. I don't think you can go wrong with having a few though.

I like this set for a number of reasons. You can get a Tantaun if you didn't have one already, there are a lot of unique minifigures which is fun, and there are also imperial minifigures so you have instant action on your hands. I would say if you can find it on sale it's worth picking up, but that goes without saying for any set, lol, if it is on sale it is always a better deal than full price.

True indeed,
Especially that the regular price for this set is CHF 159 in Switzerland, which corresponds to USD 160.
An utter scandal, if you ask me.

I personally like this set. It came with lots of minifigs plus a Tantaun and it was great use for further MOC. However, some reviews concluded that it wasn't a good set because it wasn't looking like a hoth echo base while TLG simply minimized various scenarios and assembled them together to build this set. Thus there was lots of pros and cons.

I kept asking myself if this set is worth to invest. Actaully, I wonder if this set will be doing as good as 8129 AT-AT Walker. 8129 was popular because the overall design was matching to the AT-AT from movie. Unfortunately, the going-to-be discontinued Hoth Echo Base was not. Furthermore, TLC keeps releasing new hoth echo sets that hurts historical hoth sets, such as 7749 Echo Base, 8089 Hoth Wampa Cave, and 7666 Hoth Rebel Base. How many AFOL will be interested in this set at overpriced?

I don't think it will do well. I only got one long time ago and never decided to buy more even though I found them on sale several times and for much cheaper of what I paid. Also the TRUs near me had a ton left last time I was there. And that was after they had it on sale.
In other countries it 'could' do well but I am pretty sure it won't in the USA.

I only got one at Toys R US at 50% off. I don't think this set will do well in term of investment purpose. I hope I am wrong about this. However, we will never know until the product has been retired.

Anyone have any recent advice in regards to 7879 - Hoth Echo Base? I bought it several years ago because I THOUGHT it was being retired. This was when I was fairly new to LEGO investing and thought it was being invested because I found it at a great sale price about a year after it was released. For some reason I thought it was being discontinued and jumped on it. Luckily I only bought one. Recently I've been tempted to list it for $80 just so I can get my money back and gain some storage space. Anyone have any news on it? Is it ever going to be retired?
